Why You Should Just Quit…

Last night I had a chance to “test” my strength.

And honestly, it sucked.

Worst. Performance. Ever.

I was doing great until 2 weeks ago.

I was setting PR’s – numbers I hadn’t hit in 15-20 years.

I was feeling great!

Then the wheels came off the proverbial cart.

I missed lots of sleep.

My recovery went into the toilet.

And my bodyweight plummeted.

(As it always does under stress.)

No wonder last night sucked so bad.

So I decided this morning I was going to quit.

I’m not doing this anymore.

It’s just not worth it.

And I think you should do the same thing too.

Give up.

Throw in the towel.

Walk away.

Shrug your shoulders and slouch off into the sunset.

After all, none of this really matters anyway, does it?

Of course it does!



Because you were made with a purpose.

Your life has purpose and meaning.

And at the very least, you are to serve as an example of what it means to do things right –

To live excellently.

To be an example to those around you and those following behind you.

So I am quitting.

But not in the way you might think.

I’m quitting the direction I was heading –

Honestly, I didn’t pursue excellence this time around.

I thought I could take the short cut.

I programmed for primarily neural gains – instead of spending some time gaining some muscle.

(On programming: I tell my coach my “limitations” and he programs “around” them.

There’s an interesting observation on limitations we’ll discuss sometime…)

And I thought I could perform well at a lighter bodyweight.

Even though I know that I’m at my best – that is – excellent –

When I’m heavier – much heavier.

That’s where I have the most leverage based upon my structure.

I just didn’t want to put forth the effort to eat and train to grow the muscle necessary to be excellent.

Shame on me.

I got lazy.

Never again.

I learned my lesson – the hard way.

So, I’ll make this week a “down week” – I’ll still train – but it’ll be light and mostly restorative and next week, I’ll re-start my efforts.

So if what you’re doing isn’t working – then quit.

Do something different.

Do something smarter.

And realize this:

There are no “shortcuts.”

The 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, said that if he had to cut down a tree, he’d spend 75% of his time sharpening his axe.

There’s only Proper Preparation.

Not just Preparation.

Proper Preparation.

In my case, it’s the difference between training for neural strength gains versus structural strength gains…

Training to get stronger without gaining muscle or training to get stronger by growing muscle.

The difference is that strength gained by growing muscle first lasts longer and isn’t easily lost.

That’s an especially important concept for those of us over 35.

If you’ve been struggling to see the results you desire from your kettlebell workouts, especially when it counts, then you’re most likely not using Proper Preparation.

No worries though – you can make a quick turnaround.

Just acknowledge the facts and make a course correction.
