Yeah… I know, kinda weird subject line today.
And no, I’m not talking about behavioral opthomology
or specialized sports vision drills either.
(They work, but crawling works just as well too.)
Nope, I’m talking about something else altogether.
And it’s endemic (wow – 25 cent word there) in today’s
society – what with all our smart phones, text messaging,
We are all highly distracted and highly distractable.
And more often than not, that means that what should
get done or what we truly want to do, often doesn’t
The urgent displaces the important.
This creates tension and low grade stress, and sometimes
a “subconscious panic” that you’re missing something –
because, well, you are.
That’s why you (heck, we – all of us) need to renew
Or rather our F.O.C.U.S.
(Yeah, you know it – awesome acronym time!)
Today we’ll be looking at the big fat “F”.
Fortunately for us, unlike when we were in school, the F
doesn’t mean “failure.”
F = Fix Your Eyes On Your Goal
Let’s break it on down…
Fix = To place without moving or removing. To glue.
This means you can’t let yourself get distracted.
Decide on your goal and keep it in the forefront of
This brings us to –
Eyes = Not just your physical eyes, but also the eyes
of your mind.
This is your imagination.
Let it run wild about how life will be when you achieve
This will do two things:
1. It will give you hope, which will keep you moving
2. It will activate the part of your brain called the
Reticular Activating System, which makes it easier
for you to make decisions toward your goal.
(This will come in VERY handy when we look at the
“O” next time.)
Your = Well, YOUR.
This must be yours, no one else’s.
You have to want to be stronger because YOU want to
be stronger, or leaner, or in better condition – not because
your wife is nagging you, but because you recognize
and more importantly EMBRACE the benefits to your
life for being so.
Cause if you’re doing it for someone else, then it’ll
most likely not stick.
Goal = A Target, or Finish Line
Just like any race that you run, or any competition you
compete in, there is a target or a finish line.
And it’s DEFINITIVE. You know where it is and it is
And you can see IT.
Whether it’s a number on a scale or a weight in your hand
or a number on a snatch test.
You can see it. It’s tangible. Real.
Without it, you’ll go nowhere. Well, maybe not “nowhere” –
you’ll end up somewhere, just not the somewhere you
want to go.
Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at the “O” in F.O.C.U.S.
I guarantee you’ll never guess what the “O” stands for
and when you do, you’ll understand why you may have
failed so many times in the past.
In the meantime –
1. Make sure you are 100% certain you know where
you’re going and then give it your attention.
2. If strength is your goal, make sure you grab your copy
of “Kettlebell STRONG!” – it’s a map to strength. All you
have to do is follow it.
